It takes Avalon a moment to find Will amongst the plethora of new minds on the Narrenschiff. He feels different from how he had before they had lost their powers, but they have no idea what the difference is. Before they connect fully, he might feel them brush his mind a few times, as if moving on in their search and then coming back to him. His mind has been silent before, so they could be wrong.

When they feel more confident that they have the right mind, they switch to words. ::I heard what the Captain said about letting wardens go home, but if he has trouble with supplies, removing mouths to feed would be an easy choice. Do you think he needs us for something?::

They feel him tense at their mental touch, then start to relax when he recognizes them. ::Would you prefer the communicators?:: They trust their telepathy more than the Narrenschiff’s network, but they think private communications could still be secure.

::The Barge has encountered other ships before, but I only know what others have told me. I could see the Captain wanting to use us as a battery.::

::I heard that no one graduates or gets deals here, but not much else. If they have difficulty with supplies and no goal to work towards, then why stay?::

They lay back in their hammock, staring up at the ceiling. ::What feels desperate? The people here, or the ship itself?:: They can sense most people here, but have yet to try to reach out to anyone directly. Some people are perceivable but unreachable, and some feel completely nonexistent, just like people on the Barge.
