On the day of the fencing conversation with Gaius

Um, hey. That fencing guy. Gaius. He told me Shaw asked him to contact me about getting healed by him any time I get hurt and... Well, he wouldn't tell me who else Shaw put on that list, but there's no way she'd ask for it for me and not you unless it was... bad. Has he approached you about it?

Actually, she had me go talk to him. After consideration and probably too many questions, I've accepted the offer.

I didn't know she'd asked about you, too. You sound like you're thinking about it.

It seems ungrateful to just turn it down. I was surprised she asked for me. I'm not... someone she generally worries about. I was curious what it entails, though, and he went on about needing permission. I kind of meant physically, but I'm not sure he knows. Anyway, I thought I should ask someone who has probably had a chance to think about it. You're doing it? [That's a pretty compelling endorsement.]

As far as that's concerned, it's already done. I've given him my permission. I can take it away at any time.

And I can see why that'd be important to him. He's- he had vastly more power back home. So the physical process of providing this as a service is hardly even a drop in the bucket of effort for him. From what he told me, he can tell the different 'states' of people on the ship- if he's got consent, I believe. And he can know what's broken and how and fix it back the way it's supposed to be. Some control over the aspects of life and death. So it's definitely not the sort of energy we're used to, but he has mastery of it.

Also- Shaw does worry about you. She wouldn't put it that way, but you're on her list of people to watch out for...probably moreso now.

Obviously.

I think we're both extremely hard to kill anyway, honestly. But I also think we're both prone to attracting trouble. So maybe it's not a terrible idea to have the extra protection. Help balance things in our favor.

[Caring about him second hand is the most she's cared about him. He feels stupid about how much it pleases him.]

I'll call Gaius back and take it.

[Honestly, if Gaius had told him 'Will Graham is signed up', he probably would have signed right up then.]

[ His voice is warm. It sounds like Malcolm doesn't have entirely the same concerns he did, but- that's okay. Will would like Malcolm to be capable of getting in and out of more trouble, if he's honest. ]
